How to Reduce Stress During a Home Renovation

At Extrabuild we’ve been building homes for over 30 years, so we know how exciting renovating your home is, but also how stressful it can be. From choosing the right builder to dealing with unexpected issues, there are many factors that can cause renovation stress. We’ve made a list of some steps you can take to reduce your stress levels and enjoy the process of creating your dream home:

6 Steps to make your home renovation stress-free

Set realistic expectations

Straight off the bat, it’s important to have realistic expectations for your renovation. Understand that there may be unexpected issues or delays, that even your builder can’t predict. Make sure you confirm a realistic timeline and budget when meeting with potential builders.

Choose the right builder

The builder you choose for your project will make a huge difference to your renovation experience. Make sure you research and choose a Lake Macquarie builder who has a good reputation and experience in the type of renovation you’re planning. Always check their references (speak with previous clients directly if you can) and view their past work to make sure they’re the right fit for your project.

Communicate effectively

Good communication is key to reducing stress levels during a renovation. A good builder will ensure everyone involved in the project is up to date on any changes or issues that may arise and will work with you to troubleshoot these. If you have any questions or concerns at any point in the process make sure you communicate clearly and regularly with your builder.

Understand the plan

Your builder will provide a detailed timeline for your renovation, outlining every aspect, from Council approvals and demolition to flooring installation. Understanding this plan and regularly checking the progress will help you to feel informed and prepared, making the renovation process smoother and more enjoyable.

While it’s important to reference the plan, it’s also important to stay flexible. Understand that unexpected issues or changes may arise, and be willing to work with your builder to adapt and make any changes as needed.

Take breaks

Renovations can be overwhelming, even more so if you’re living in the house during a renovation. If you’re able to, we recommend taking ‘breaks’ to give yourself time to recharge. This could be getting away for a night or weekend and spending quality time with loved ones.

If you’re finding that your renovation is disruptive to your day-to-day routine we recommend scheduling time for self-care activities like exercise or meditation to help give your mind an opportunity to relax.

Focus on the end result

When renovation stress starts to get to you, try focusing on the end result. Think of the beautiful new bathroom you’ll be relaxing in or the modern kitchen you’ll be cooking in. Reminding yourself why you wanted to renovate and visualising your finished home can help you stay motivated and reduce your stress.
