Extrabuild’s Commitment to Apprenticeships

At Extrabuild, building homes is only part of what we do. Since we started in 1992, we have also been committed to supporting apprentices and giving them the chance to grow into skilled tradespeople who will carry our industry forward.

Our Story

Extrabuild is a family business founded by Paul and Kathleen Dyett. Over the last 30 years, we have become one of the Hunter’s most trusted builders, known for quality renovations, extensions and custom new homes.

With Paul’s career in building spanning more than three decades, his experience and dedication have earned him a place on the MBA Newcastle Board of Directors. His involvement ensures Extrabuild continues to play an active role in shaping the future of the industry, with a strong focus on mentorship and apprenticeships.

Our company has been shaped by five values that we live by every day: honesty, respect, innovation, communication and customer service. These values guide every project and form the way we support apprentices. We believe that when you enjoy the work you do, you do it well, and that is the mindset we share with those who join us.

Supporting Apprentices Through the NMBA

We are proud to have supported the future of the construction industry for more than three decades. We partner with MBA Apprentices to provide hands-on training and real-world experience for aspiring carpenters, helping them build the skills, confidence and work ethic needed for long-term success in the trade.

This commitment to growth and mentorship runs deep in our story. Paul himself began his career as an MBA apprentice and knows firsthand the value of training and guidance at the start of a career.

Today, as a long-standing member of the association and a representative on the MBA Newcastle Board of Directors since 2023, he continues to champion apprenticeships and professional development across the region.

From our 1st meeting, we knew we would go with Paul. He understood our visions and had alot of great ideas - nothing was ever problem. His builders, Andrew and Bailey, always showed up on time and worked with us to ensure we were all on the same page. The tilers, plumbers, gyprockers and electricians all completed work to high standards. Kathleen was always lovely to chat to and make sure we complied with building requirements. A few unexpected things popped up, which put us over budget, but the end result is amazing. We are very happy with our renovation with Extrabuild.

We chose Paul and his team after seeing Extrabuild undertaking a similar renovation elesewhere in our suburb. We spoke at length with the home owner and felt very comfortable that Paul would deliver a cost effective, stress free solution. Paul delivered this in spades with his team working dilligently and cohesively throughout the project, despite incessant queries from the home owner. His tradesman were extremely courteous and capable - and tidy. Pauls' experience working with certifiers and subcontract trades certainly eased our concerns. Paul also paid close attention to the existing house design and worked hard to match up existing trims where possible, and suggesting amenable options if original materials were no longer available. The result has given the old house a new life and we are very thankful to Extrabuild for their assistance and prefessional appraoch throughout the project.

Paul and his team undertook a large scale renovation on the bottom storey of my house, including changing the garage into living space and adding in master bed, WIR and ensuite. They were great to work with, very professional and helpful and the end result high quality. There were some delays and small errors that got rectified, but I think this is unavoidable to some extent in building and especially with covid delays. I would definitely recommend building with Extrabuild.

After a bad experience prior I decided to get a few quotes. Paul called, inspected the job and discussed the options available to complete the repair. The selling point was that Paul had the knowledge to complete the job which became more apparent after speaking with the other builders.
